AIS Systems

Choose the Right AIS System for Your Boat

AIS helps equipped vessels exchange identity, position, course and speed information. Choose by what you need to receive, transmit and display—not by model name alone.

AIS receiver, transceiver or Class B+

  • Receiver: displays transmissions from other AIS-equipped vessels but does not broadcast your boat.
  • Class B transceiver: receives traffic and broadcasts your vessel data when correctly installed and programmed.
  • Class B+ / SOTDMA: supports higher reporting performance for suitable vessels and operating needs.

Verify the complete installation

Confirm display compatibility, NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 connections, GPS antenna requirements and the VHF antenna plan. Some installations use a dedicated AIS antenna; others require a manufacturer-approved splitter. An MMSI and correct vessel information are required before a transceiver is commissioned.

Compare compatible chartplotters, network cables and sensors and marine communication equipment. Never assume a cable, antenna, splitter or GPS sensor is included.

Need help? Tell MarineWaze which display, VHF radio and network are already aboard. We’ll help separate required components from optional upgrades and identify what still needs manufacturer verification.
